Spain has only two wine regions with the highest possible classification, "Qualified": Rioja and Priorat. Everything else here is explained simply by looking at the ground: llicorella, a dark slate that barely lets anything grow except century-old Garnacha and Cariñena vines, clinging to slopes so steep that most of the work is still done by hand. That's where one of the most powerful, singular wines in the world comes from. Today, Ragnia takes you to taste it where it's born.
Hotel pickup: the first step of an unhurried day
The day starts wherever you are: we pick you up from your hotel in Barcelona (or wherever you prefer), so Priorat begins the moment you get in the car. The drive inland is already part of the experience: the landscape shifts gradually from coastline to the slate mountains that give the appellation its name, and you arrive at the first winery with time to spare.
First winery: the landscape turned into wine
The first stop shows you why Priorat is grown on almost impossible terraces. Here you'll get to know century-old Garnacha and Cariñena vines that yield barely a handful of bunches each, the reason these wines are so concentrated and mineral. You'll see how the wine is made from grape to glass, finishing with a guided tasting of the house's wines: deep-coloured reds, with ripe black fruit, a touch of liquorice and wild herbs, firm tannins and that distinctive mineral finish. The very slate you've just walked on, turned into wine in the glass.
Second winery: the other face of Priorat
Every winery interprets the same land differently: some go for long barrel ageing and wines built to cellar, others for a fresher, more direct Priorat with less oak and more fruit. The day's second stop shows you that contrast with a new guided tasting: if the first winery gave you a long-aged, powerful and spiced Priorat, here you'll discover the other side: younger, fruitier wines, with less time in barrel and an acidity that makes them far easier to drink. You leave the day understanding how many different Priorats fit within the same appellation.

How is this different from Wineries of Catalonia or Cava Houses in the Penedès?
Priorat is the most intense of the three: a full day, powerful red wines and a truly unique landscape. Wineries of Catalonia is shorter and closer, and Cava Houses in the Penedès is designed for those after bubbles and celebration.
